Honky Tonk Time Machine

Iconic entertainer and King of Country Music, George Strait, released his brand-new album Honky Tonk Time Machine Friday, March 29 on MCA Nashville, debuting as his record-extending 27th No. 1 Billboard Country album. Comprised of 12 original titles plus Strait’s version of the Johnny Paycheck classic “Old Violin,” Honky Tonk Time Machine marks an incredible 30th career studio album for Strait. Strait, who produced the album alongside Chuck Ainlay, wrote eight of the 13 tracks including “Sing One with Willie” featuring Willie Nelson that the pair happily debuted at a recent Nashville show, marking the first time the two country music icons have ever shared the stage.

Whiskey is the gasoline that lights the fire that burns the bridge
Ice creates the water that's no longer runnin' under it
Stool holds the fool that pours the whiskey on his broken heart
The cigarettes create the smoke that hides the lonesome in his eye
The jukebox plays Hank, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"
The dance floor holds the folks trying to forget who they are
And that's what happens in every little honky tonk bar

Friday night, it's a given
I'll be L-I-V-N, livin'
We'll dance on the bar 'til we're sleeping it off in the car
Monday morning, it's a given
I'll be D-R-A-G-N, draggin'
And that's what happens in every little honky tonk bar

Neon lights flashin' bright 'til you're almost hypnotized
Waitress, short skirt, gets hit on by every guy
Comin' and goin', always rollin' with the flow
Bartender pourin' drinks, Código do a shot
You think you're tall and bulletproof until somebody says you're not
You step outside thinkin' you're gonna show 'em you are
And that's what happens in every little honky tonk bar

Friday night, it's a given
We'll be L-I-V-N, livin'
We'll dance on the bar 'til we're sleeping it off in the car
Monday morning, it's a given
We'll be D-R-A-G-N, draggin'
And that's what happens in every little honky tonk bar
Yeah that's what happens in every little honky tonk bar

Whiskey is the gasoline that lights the fire that burns the bridge

There must have been a genie at the bottom of the bottle
'Cause I was hopin' real hard that you'd appear
The temperature here keeps gettin' hotter
So let's go ahead and get on outta here
'Cause I've got two more wishes

I hear that good things come in threes, and I believe it
And I'm seeing one that's comin' true tonight
The way my heart is feeling's got me thinkin'
My future's standin' right here before my eyes
And I've got two more wishes
Yes, I've got two more wishes

You'd say you're mine
For the rest of time
Every day, we'd fall in love
And that's what I want

You'd say you're mine
For the rest of time
Every day, we'd fall in love
And that's what I want

There must have been a genie at the bottom of the bottle
'Cause I was hopin' real hard that you'd appear
The temperature here keeps gettin' hotter
So let's go ahead and get on outta here
'Cause I've got two more wishes
Yes, I have got two more wishes

She took off down the road
Towards Austin, and I lost it
I heard she wound up in Fort Worth
No, I ain't been the same since
My heart's as hard as that old Caliche dirt

Some days are better than others
Some are mothers
I ain't even gonna lie
Some days, I don't wanna get up
I just wanna give up
And don't even get me started on some nights

I guess I could always call her, but why bother?
Hell, she won't pick up that phone
Got no pride left to swallow, so tomorrow
I'll try again to just move on

Some days are better than others
Some are mothers
I ain't even gonna lie
Some days, I don't wanna get up
I just wanna give up
Don't even get me started on some nights

Some days are better than others
Some are mothers
I ain't even gonna lie
Some days, I don't wanna get up
I just wanna give up
And don't even get me started
Some days are better than others
Some are mothers
I ain't even gonna lie
Some days, I don't wanna get up
I just wanna give up
And don't even get me started on some nights
Mmm, some nights

She took off down the road
Towards Austin, and I lost it

God and country music, like whiskey and a prayer
Like Johnny Cash's arm 'round Billy Graham
God and country music, they both never really change
You find 'em when you need 'em where you stand

There's always lost and the found
Darkness and the I saw the light
It's livin' in those small towns
And some church and backroad honky tonk tonight
It's a dance between the sin and the salvation
Come hell or high water, there's two things still worth saving
God and country music
God and country music

God and country music, they both show you the truth
You've seen the low of the valley and the highs of the mountains too
Folded hands and guitar strings, jukebox preachers and angels singin'
Call you like they knew ya, between the hell and Hallelujah

It's always lost and the found
Darkness and the I saw the light
It's still livin' in those small towns
And some church and backroad honky tonk tonight
It's a dance between the sin and the salvation
Come hell or high water, there's two things still worth saving
God and country music
God and country music

There's always lost and the found
Darkness and the I saw the light
It's still livin' in those small towns
And some church and backroad honky tonk tonight
It's a dance between the sin and the salvation
Come hell or high water, there's two things still worth saving
God and country music
God and country music
God and country music
God and country music

The whole world's spinning in the wrong direction
Body and soul needs a resurrection
Ain't had a single thing go my way
And I can't tell ya how many days

I need blue water, I need a sunny day
Blue water, sail all my cares away
Head out to see when the tide rolls in
Feel like a brand new man again
I need blue
Gonna drown my troubles in blue water

Rolled all the way through Arizona
Thought I found the answer in Sedona
This desert's gettin' old to me
I need a little bit of that deep blue sea

I need blue water, I need a sunny day
Blue water, sail all my cares away
Head out to see when the tide rolls in
Feel like a brand new man again
I need blue
Gonna drown my troubles in blue water

I drove right though the heart of Texas
Miles and miles of empty stretches
Parked out by the lake near Santa Fe
Started thinkin' 'bout Aransas Bay

I need blue water
Gonna drown my troubles in blue water

I need the motion of the ocean
That's the only magic potion

Blue water, I need a sunny day
Blue water, sail all my cares away
Head out to see when the tide rolls in
Feel like a brand new man again
I need blue
Gonna drown my troubles in blue water

Gonna drown my troubles in blue
Gonna drown my troubles in blue water
Pick out a sunny day
Blue
Drown my troubles in blue water
Drown my troubles in blue water

She was a sometimes love
An every-now-and-then touch
That momentarily
Brought out the best in me
I didn't think that much of it
My heart can easily love it or leave it
Told myself I didn't need it

And years have gone by
She's moved on, so have I
Or have I?
That part of my life
That chapter I thought I'd closed
I close my eyes, but she's not gone
Oh, why am I still holding on?
Sometimes, love hangs around a little too long

I never thought a thing about the things I said to her
And her to me
Love was just a word and all our promises we never meant to keep
Or so I thought
She was a sometimes love
But sometimes, love hangs around a little too long

And years have gone by
She's moved on, so have I
Or have I?
That part of my life
That chapter I thought I'd closed
I close my eyes, but she's not gone
Oh, why am I still holding on?
She was a sometimes love
But sometimes, love hangs around a little too long
Sometimes, love hangs around a little too long

Baby, just like you
It's something new
I just had to try
I didn't plan on it
But a sip and you'll want it
It's a beautiful high

The perfect recipe
Baby, you and me
The secret's been found
Let's pour one right now

I'm talkin' 'bout Código
I take it with me everywhere I go
Best tequila, baby, don't you know
A little sip and you're ready to roll
They make it down in Mexico
A little state called Jalisco
Where the beautiful agaves grow
I'm talkin' 'bout Código

Any way you like it
Any way you wanna try it
I'll try it too
I don't care if it's a habit
As long as you have it
And I have it with you

Hasta la Cruz
I'll be singing to you
All the way home
We'll make this our song

I'm talkin' 'bout Código
I take it with me everywhere I go
Best tequila, baby, don't you know
A little sip and you're ready to roll
They make it down in Mexico
A little state called Jalisco
Where the beautiful agaves grow
I'm talkin' 'bout Código

Straight up or on the rocks
Dressed up or not
Make it a surprise
Throw it back and close your eyes

I'm talkin' 'bout Código
I take it with me everywhere I go
Best tequila, baby, don't you know
A little sip and you're ready to roll
They make it down in Mexico
A little state called Jalisco
Where the beautiful agaves grow
I'm talkin' 'bout Código

I'm talkin' 'bout Código
I take it with me everywhere I go
Best tequila, baby, don't you know
A little rip and you're ready to roll
They make 'em down in Mexico
A little state called Jalisco
Where the beautiful agaves grow
I'm talkin' 'bout Código
Where the beautiful agaves grow
I'm talkin' 'bout Código

I can't recall one time in my life
I've felt as lonely as I do tonight
I feel like I could lay down and get up no more
It's the damndest feeling, I never felt it before

Tonight I feel like an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

Don't ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can't say
I only wish this feeling would just go away
I guess it's 'cause the truth is the hardest thing I've ever faced
'Cause you can't change the truth in the slightest way
I've tried

So I asked myself, I said "George, where in the hell do you go from here?"
Then like a fool, I turned around and I looked in the mirror

And there I was seeing an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

So one more time, just to be sure
I said "George, where you gonna go from here?"
And you know, there wasn't a nickel's worth of difference
When I looked into the mirror

'Cause there I was seeing an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

And just like that, it hit me why that old violin and I were just alike
We give our all to music, and soon we'll give our life
Precious memories, how they linger

- Johnny Paycheck

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Not today, not tonight, not any other time
Girl, it ain't gonna happen
If you're wonderin' or askin'
It's the farthest thing from my mind
Any place, anywhere, neither here nor there
Girl, that ain't happenin'
Can't pull no fast ones

Nothing's gonna take me away from you
Take me away from you
Nothing's gonna take me away

Girl, my hands are where they wanna be
Yours and mine just suits me fine
Now we're talking
Ain't gonna be no walking
Locked into your eyes right now
Like the sun in the sky, like the stars flying by
That old moon is shining
It's perfect timing

Nothing's gonna take me away from you
Take me away from you
Nothing's gonna take me away

Baby, nothing's gonna break this chain
The strongest winds of a hurricane

Nothing's ever gonna take me away from you
Take me away from you
Nothing's gonna take me away

Your breath on my neck right now
Got me torn up and down, got my head spinnin' 'round
Let's take it faster
'Cause you know what I'm after

Nothing's ever gonna take me away from you
Take me away from you
Nothing's gonna take me away
Take me away from you
Nothing's gonna take me away

- G. Strait, B. Strait, Dillon

It's gonna be a long one another graveyard shift
As he says goodbye to his wife and kids
He spends his life just like his dad's
Driving away under the weight of the badge

He's seen it all in his fifteen years
Watching our backs, facing our fears
Lord knows it ain't no easy task
Keeping us safe under the weight of the badge

He swore that oath to protect and serve
Pours his heart and soul into both those words
Lays his life on the line
The line he walks is razor fine
Tempered strength is always tough
But he ain't gonna buckle
Under the weight of the badge

Not that long ago he woke up in the hospital
With his wife and kids praying by his bed
He said "I'm gonna be alright, there's just sometimes you gotta fight"
And the truth is nothing truer could be said
I do it for us and I do it for them
And I ain't gonna buckle under the weight of the badge

It doesn't weigh a lot until you put it on
And the weight of it is staggering
Then duty calls each time
He knows he's got to answer
And it's all in the hand of
The heavy weight of the badge
And he ain't gonna buckle
Under the weight of the badge
No he ain't gonna buckle
Under the weight of the badge

- G. Strait, B. Strait, Dillon

Well, he comes in here on the first and fifteenth
Pockets just jingling like a tambourine
Makes a beeline over to that old jukebox
Fills it up to the top and the needle drops

And it's off like a rocket in a neon haze
Spinning 'em back to the good old days
Beer gets to flowing and the whiskey pours
There ain't an empty spot on the old dance floor
All cowboy hats, boots and jeans
Riding that honky tonk time machine

He's gonna make damn sure the jukebox don't rock
And the record's gonna be the only thing that bops
He's an old-school cold longneck DJ
And look at him now, here comes them old green snakes

And it's off like a rocket in a neon haze
Spinning 'em back to the good old days
Beer gets to flowing and the whiskey pours
There ain't an empty spot on the old dance floor
All cowboy hats, boots and jeans
Riding that honky tonk time machine

From A to Z and everything between
He's flying that honky tonk time machine

And it's off like a rocket in a neon haze
Spinning 'em back to the good old days
Beer gets to flowing and the whiskey pours
There ain't an empty spot on the old dance floor
All cowboy hats, boots and jeans
Riding that honky tonk time machine
Everybody's back in MWZ
They're riding that honky tonk time machine

Well, he comes in here on the first and fifteenth
Pockets just jingling like a tambourine
Makes a beeline over to that old jukebox
Fills it up to the top and the needle drops

- B. Strait, Long, Bart Butler

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Caught a glimpse of Heaven when I couldn't catch my breath
I felt His presence in the darkest of days
I've asked for direction, and I've been shown the way

And I believe when I pray, somebody hears
When I fall on my knees, my words aren't fallin' on deaf ears
And He has the answers when the answers can't be found
I know without a doubt what goes up comes down

I've been lead from temptation, though I was standin' at it's door
Delivered from evil when I could run no more
I've seen the eyes of God through the eyes of a child
I've thanked Him for my blessings and I've felt it when he smiled

And I believe when I pray, somebody hears
When I fall on my knees, my words aren't fallin' on deaf ears
And He has the answers when the answers can't be found
I know without a doubt what goes up comes down

I raise my hands when my burdens are too heavy
And He lifts me up just like that cross he didn't have to carry

And He has the answers when the answers can't be found
I know without a doubt what goes up comes down

My greatest prayers will be answered
When he returns to claim his crown
I know without a doubt what goes up comes down (I believe)
What goes up must come down (I believe)

[George Strait:]
I've had a wonderful career
But I think it's quite clear
So I'm writing this down in a song
I just couldn't resist
It's a nice little twist
And I think you'll agree that it's just wrong

I ain't never got to sing one with Willie
And I've held it inside long enough
Now I ain't too proud, so I'm going to shout it out loud
I ain't never got to sing one with Willie

Yeah I've hear him with Merle
Waylon and Cash
Jones had told me, "That man is totally gracious"
And I'm thinking "Damn, why not me?"
We could even sing it on TV
Just like him and old Julio Iglesias

I ain't never got to sing one with Willie
And I've held it inside long enough
Now I ain't too proud, so I'm going to shout it out loud
I ain't never got to sing one with Willie

[Willie Nelson:]
We've travelled back and forth
Up and down that old highway
Wherever our big buses go
And I think that its great
To finally sing one with Strait
And our friends [?], I know

I ain't never got to sing one with Strait
And I think that it's been long enough
Now I ain't too proud, just listen to the crowd
Finally got to sing one with ol' George Strait

[George Strait:]
Look at me now, I'm singing with Willie
Thank you man, you just made my career

[Willie Nelson:]
[?] something with Strait
It's always gonna be great
And I finally got to sing one with old George

[George Strait & Willie Nelson:]
And I'm really proud
So I'll shout it out loud
I finally got to sing one
[Willie Nelson:] With ol' George
[George Strait:] With ol' Willie
